Common Characteristics
There are many physical characteristics of fetal alcohol syndrome. Many include facial features such as small head, small eye openings, short nose, thin upper lip, underdeveloped jaw, smooth philtrum, and flat midface. Along with facial abnormalities a baby born with FAS typically has a low birth weight and poor muscle tone. Not only are there these numerous different kinds of physical malformations but a child's hand is also slightly different. They tend to have different crease patterns on their hands. A child with FAS also has many developmental delays. They may have poor coordination or poor skills such as fine motor skills and social skills. They also typically lack imagination and suffer learning disabilities, along with behavioral problems.
