Suggestions for Teachers
It may be difficult to teach a child with fetal alcohol syndrome. They typically get easily distracted and have poor attention. These students also have difficulties with organization and often become frustrated. In order to help these students learn in a classroom there are many things that a teacher has to consider first.
1. Make sure you know the students background very well. This will help you know what to expect when dealing with a student with FAS.
2. Learn what the child's strengths and weaknesses are; and focus on their strengths.
3. Be extremely patient and understanding.
4. Provide a consistent schedule and rules.
5. Provide frequent breaks.
6. Provide direct directions.
7. Develop a behavior plan.
8. Have a reward system in place.
9. Provide a safe environment.
10. Provide concrete examples.
